A recent case in Spain has brought to light a poorly conceived scheme involving fraudulent behavior at a roulette table. The Alicante Provincial Prosecutor’s Office has requested prison sentences for three individuals involved in the plot, which transpired over the course of a month last year.
Roulette Scam: A Family Affair
In February and March of the previous year, the father would frequent the live casino, only to play at the American roulette table where his son was stationed. Although casinos closely scrutinize their tables, the decision to exclusively gamble at his son’s table, a blatant disregard for gaming regulations in Alicante, went unnoticed for a while. The trio’s modus operandi involved the father placing a bet on a dropped ball, which, despite rules to the contrary, was accepted by the dealer and the table manager. The croupier, with the consent of his table manager girlfriend, would then surreptitiously place the father’s betting chips on the winning number after the ball had stopped spinning, guaranteeing a fast payout.
An Ongoing Effort to Combat Fraudulent Behavior at the Casino
The case is just one example of a casino’s difficult time keeping its roulette games – both manual and electronic – clean the past couple of years. However, each time a crook tries to beat the system, the casinos learn and try to adjust their operations to repel future attempts at fraud. In the Alicante case, the casino was wise enough to report the suspicious activities directly to law enforcement. The trio has been charged with attempted fraud in a professional game and is awaiting their sentence from the court.
Upholding Responsible Gambling Practices
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the imperative need to uphold responsible gambling practices in casinos. The Alicante Prosecutor’s Office has recommended that, in addition to serving prison time, the trio should reimburse the casino for the stolen money, plus additional fees and interest. Despite the setbacks, Spain continues to strive for integrity in its casino operations, both for manual and electronic roulette games. Each instance of fraud provides an opportunity for the gaming industry to learn, adapt and work towards preventing future attempts. It is clearly evident that maintaining a fair and transparent gaming environment is essential for the casino industry to flourish and retain the trust of its patrons.
