In 2020, Discord was valued at $3.5 billion dollars. In 2021 their valuation spiked to $7 billion.

None of the above figures point towards Discord shutting down.

In December 2021, Discord announced Liz Hamren will be stepping in as Discord’s COO. She will be overseeing teams across business development, marketing, and operations. Earlier she was the Corporate VP for Gaming Experiences & Platforms for Xbox at Microsoft.

It seems Discord is in capable hands and is going to add innovative and exciting features to their platform in the coming years.

But every rumor has its sources and there were some fake rumors about Discord closing. Also, there were some ongoing public investigations about Discord and its rights of usage which added fuel to the fire. 

Why were there rumors of Discord shutting down in 2022?

FBI Investigation

FBI was investigating cybercriminal activity on Discord groups. Hackers were using it to share stolen data, like usernames and passwords. Also, there were mentions of improper use of Discord chat services. This news first turned the spotlight towards Discord

Unmoderated Private Servers

Due to the unmoderated nature of Discord private servers, in 2017, a server was used to organize the Charlottesville, Virginia rally by white supremacists.

Soon after this Discord banner members of such groups and commissioned out alt-right servers. Since then they have also launched bot-moderation & verification  tools to promptly suppress such groups.

Fake Rumors

On top of the investigations, a fake message chain started circulating in Discord. The message said, due to an increase in the number of users Discord will be cutting down on inactive accounts.

The message urged users to forward the message to 15 other users to ensure that they retain their Discord profile. However, there was no official newsletter published intimating such a strategy.

A message thread on TeamFortress was circulating Discord shutting down memes. They titled it Discord Shutting Down and commented with silly memes. Most users who glanced over the comments and not in the contents of the memes thought  Discord was being dismantled. 

Because of the ongoing legal investigations, and unauthentic messages, many users panicked about Discord closing. But the reality is far from it.

Discord is still well perceived among the gaming community and is witnessing an impressive inflow of active users every passing month. So, the rumors of Discord shutting down isn’t true.
