Paramount Pictures has released the official details of its upcoming release, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. With a star-studded cast that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Daisy Head, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant, the movie will be released on March 31, 2023. It is the second attempt at a live-action film based on the popular game Dungeons & Dragons, with the first released in 2000 by New Line Cinema.
The cast and plot
The open-ended story structure of Dungeons & Dragons allowed the filmmakers to create new characters and plotlines that fit within the game’s world. The story of Honor Among Thieves is said to be heavily influenced by the events of the Forgotten Realms campaign.
Edgin Darvis, played by Chris Pine, is the lead character, accompanied by his criminal partner, Holga, played by Michelle Rodriguez. They are joined by Regé-Jean Page, who plays the paladin Xenk, and Justice Smith, who plays Simon Aumar, a wild magic sorcerer recruited by Edgin for his quest.
Other cast members include Daisy Head, who plays the wizard and necromancer Sofina, and Sophia Lillis, who plays Doric, a shapeshifting druid. Hugh Grant stars as Forge Fitzwilliam, a mysterious rogue. According to Grant, “This little band of comrades, they’re all a bit crap. [Pine’s character is] not great at being a bard. And the magician, played by Justice, is really bad. What do they call magicians in Dungeons & Dragons? Sorcerer. He’s not much good. And Michelle’s character has been thrown out of whatever. What is she? Barbarian. And is still in love with her husband, who is in love with someone else.”
Chris Pine’s Edgin Darvis is classified as a bard, a character known for combat and magic abilities. Pine joked to Esquire about being the film’s comic relief: “They’re like, ‘We’re just so thankful that you’re willing to emasculate yourself onscreen.’ I was like, ‘Guys, this is not the way to go about complimenting me.'”
Michelle Rodriguez’s Holga is a barbarian who helped Edgin raise his daughter after his wife was murdered. Regé-Jean Page said he got in shape with “the best ass of his life” to play paladin Xenk. Justice Smith’s Simon Aumar is a wild magic sorcerer recruited by Edgin for his quest. Daisy Head’s Sofina is a wizard and necromancer, while Sophia Lillis’ Doric is a shapeshifting druid.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will be directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who previously directed Game Night and wrote the screenplay for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the screenplay for Honor Among Thieves, along with Michael Gilio.
The first trailer for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released in December 2022, giving fans a glimpse of the world and characters of the movie. The trailer shows the adventurers on their quest, battling monsters and encountering obstacles along the way. Chris Pine’s Edgin Darvis provides some humor in the trailer, while Michelle Rodriguez’s Holga showcases her fierce fighting skills. The trailer also features a dragon, a Dungeons & Dragons franchise staple.
