But the thing to note is that Rovio did not opt for a complete copy of Pokemon GO, but instead put their own spin on it, making sure that the game stood out in the AR landscape by turning it into a 3rd person view of the action.

The Walking Dead: Our World

Although going against all established schools of logic and common sense, walking around saving survivors of a zombie apocalypse and killing zombies was suddenly made fun of by The Walking Dead: Our World. 

This spin-off tried to do the same thing that Angry Birds did; take an established franchise, make an AR spinoff and profit. And profit they did, surprisingly. To this day, an estimated 1.5 billion zombies have been killed in the game, with many survivors being rescued.

I guess if you make a half-decent effort at marrying any two different genres, the degrees of success generally cover a larger area than we in the industry tend to think.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer

Continuing our quest into the learning of franchising, The Witcher: Monster Slayer was another such effort at milking an otherwise successful franchise by turning it into an AR game.

Despite the preconception, Monster Slayer is actually a very adequate effort at making an AR game interesting; giving people and especially Witcher fans the motivation to actually go outside and away from the console version of the game.

If you need to kill some time really quick and don’t mind walking around getting random quests from NPCs, this is the game for you. And the monsters are pretty cool too, so that’s a plus.

Wokamon

If you think that this was a hipster take on the negatives of playing a game like Pokemon GO and trying to turn it into a life lesson instead (“Woke’’amon), then you’d be wrong. 

Wokamon is actually quite the charming take on the genre since it involves an actual progression-based system wherein you get a tamagotchi creature and take care of it as if it were your pet. 

The game gets pretty fun if you are interested in maintaining your ‘gotchis and customizing them with fun new attires, items and other cosmetics. 

Jurassic World: Alive

Jurassic World: Alive is much the same as the rest of the list (duh). The game involves a Zoo Tycoon-style experience where you venture out into the wild and collect dinosaurs on your phone that you can then feed, take care of and then display to the two friends who actually care about it.

Jokes aside, what saves Alive from being a soulless cash grab is the battles that you can engage your dinosaurs in. Who knew that a Tyrannosaurus Rex could have multiple levels and grow into an absolute unit decimating everything in its path?

Godzilla. Godzilla knew.

Ingress Prime

Another effort from the creators of the original Pokemon GO, Niantic Games made their second offering a completely original and evolved take on the stale formula. 

Instead of having you fight monsters and maintain toy creatures, however, Ingress Prime focuses on the all too real topic of cultural and aesthetic site preservation.

The game encourages you to discover sites that are of the above-mentioned cultural and aesthetic significance. These can be any kind of landmark, lending an open-ended feel to the game.
