If you’re a gamer, you’re surely on Discord. Surely?

Since 2015 Discord has become the preferred method of communication for millions of gamers all around the globe.

This is all great but over the last few years reports have cropped up in the press about toxic groups or group fallout.

Whilst you’re unlikely to want to delete a discord server made up of your friends there are cases where you might want to delete a discord server.

For example, maybe you started up a discord for your WoW clan. But then your clan breaks up, or never really gets going. You’re probably going to want to delete it.

Or maybe you started up a discord server centered around your favorite gaming community. But then some sociopath wormed their way in and is now trying to take over the group you started.

    Or even worse, monetize it.

    Delete Discord

Or the group you created has become intensely toxic and antagonistic. So you feel it’s better to just burn it all down and start again.

In these cases, you’re probably going to want to delete your discord server. So here’s a handy step-by-step guide.

How to delete a Discord server

Depending on whichever platform you’re using, the process of deleting your server is pretty much the same.

However, it’s slightly different on the mobile Apps so we’re featuring two guides.

    PC, Mac, and Web

First things first. Open up your discord app.  Then you’ll need to find your server settings. DO this by clicking on your server name. A drop-down box should open up.

    Discord server Deletion Tool

Click Server Settings. A new page will load that looks like this:

    Discord server Overview

Click Delete Server. It’s at the bottom of the menu in a scary red color.

Finally, Discord will want to make sure you’re 100% about this decision and this isn’t some tragic misclick. The site will prompt you to type your server’s name into the box. Type it in and finish up by clicking “Delete Server.”

    Delet Server Option

    Mobile App

Whether you’re using IOS or Android the process here is the same.

First, click the icon in the top left to reach the menu panel.

Next, tap your server icon on the left.

    Delet Server Icon

Next to your server name you should see three dots. Go ahead and click them.

    Three Dots Beside Server Name

At the bottom of your screen, you should now have another menu. Click the settings option.

    Server Setting

You’re now in your server settings menu. Nearly there! Tap the three dots.

    Three Dots Beside Server Setting

You’ll get a drop-down menu now. Click “Delete Server”.

Discord will check if this isn’t all a tragic mistake and will ask for confirmation. Click “Confirm” and congratulations your Discord server and all its content are gone.

    Alternatives to Deletion

Before you go ahead and pull the trigger on deleting your server there is another option.

Deleting your server is the nuclear option. You might be the owner but your server may have become a community. When you delete it you destroy that community. A community other users might have come to rely on.

So if you’re just deleting the server because you’re bored of it or fed up with the hassle of being a mod I would suggest you consider transferring ownership.

Transferring ownership and How it Works

If you transfer ownership to another user you’re essentially handing over the keys to the castle.  They will gain full control of changing, editing, moderating, and even deleting the server.

You will lose all control besides any privileges the new owner may choose to bestow upon you.  So only choose this option if you’re truly done with the server and want to move on without spoiling it for everyone else.

Firstly open up your discord desktop app or the web client. Much like the deletion process, click your server name in the top left.

Then choose the option for server settings.

    Server Setting

You’re looking for the User Management section now. When you find it, click Members.

    User Management section

Now you’ll see a list of all the members who have joined your server. Take a second to bask in the glow of how successful your server has become.

Now find the member to whom you’re planning to give ownership of your baby. Hover over the username and click the three dots next to their name.

    Server members

Triple check you’ve clicked the right name and then choose Transfer Ownership.

Discord will make sure you’re not mistaken. Click the slider acknowledging that you wish to transfer over ownership and then click transfer ownership to conform.

A little crown will now appear above that user’s username and you’re all done.

    Conclusion

These are the best two options to deal with a server you no longer want to run. Both have their ups and downs and most importantly both are irreversible so make sure you’re 100% sure before you click confirm.

Deletion is optimal for a server that is either a complete failure, inactive or has perhaps gotten out of hand.

Just remember that deletion is permanent. Some people make meaningful connections online and value the online groups they belong to.

Make sure you’re deleting the server for the right reasons because deletion can affect other people, not just you. Don’t delete your server just because you’re annoyed at something one or more users said to you.

Transferring ownership is the best option if you’re just tired of the hassle of running a server but don’t want to see it die. Just remember it too is permanent unless the new owner is willing to hand you the keys back.

Make sure you trust the new owner and make sure this isn’t a decision they’ve tricked or coerced you into. Also, be sure that you’re ok with someone taking over. If you don’t like the direction they choose to take your server in you’re stuck. There are no takebacks.

    FAQs

How do I leave a discord server I own?

If you’re just thinking about leaving rather than deleting the Discord server altogether then you consider transferring ownership to another user.

They’ll get full control of the server and you can just leave like you would somebody else’s server. This option leaves the community intact but allows you to leave with your head held high.
