Black dye is one of the most incredible colors of dye available in Minecraft. Black is a color that’s associated with a sense of authority and danger. So rocking a full-black kit is a surefire way to inspire awe and command respect from other players.
Making black dye in Minecraft is a fairly straightforward process, but it requires materials that can be hard to find without a bit of planning. Don’t worry, though, because this guide is here to show you the easiest ways to gather the items you need to craft and use black dye. Let’s jump right in, shall we?
What You’ll Need
You can craft Black Dye with an Ink Sac or a Wither Rose. Here’s how you can get your hands on both materials:
Ink Sac
There are two primary methods of obtaining Ink Sacs in Minecraft:
Kill Squids

Ink Sacs are dropped by Squid when they die. Squid will drop 1–3 Ink Sacs upon death, making this the most reliable method for obtaining Ink Sacs. The amount of Ink Sacs dropped increases by one for every level of Looting, up to a maximum of 6 Ink Sacs. If you find yourself in a great location with tons of Squid and a weapon with the Looting III enchantment, you’ll find it super easy to quickly farm Ink Sacs.
Use a Compound Creator

This method is useful if your current location is far away from a sea biome. An Ink Sac can be crafted by throwing 1 Iron, 1 Sulfur, and 4 Oxygen into a Compound Creator.
As you can see, that’s a lot of items to collect. In many cases, traveling long distances to find a sea biome might still be more efficient than trying to get your hands on the Iron, Sulfur, and Oxygen required to craft Ink Sacs.
Wither Rose

Black Dye can also be crafted from a Wither Rose. Again, this method is nowhere near as efficient as collecting Ink Sacs from dead Squids.
Unlike other flowers in Minecraft, Wither Roses do not generate naturally in any biome. This item is only obtained by killing a Wither, which is a dangerous and hostile mob boss that’s summoned with Soul Sand or Soul Soil. Killing a Wither will also cause it to drop a Wither Rose.
As a mob boss, the Wither is ridiculously hard to kill. For that reason, we definitely don’t recommend going this method if you plan to farm Black Dye.
How to Craft Black Dye
Now that you’ve got either your Ink Sac or Wither Rose, it’s time to start making some Black Dye! Just toss your Wither Rose or Ink Sac in the Crafting Menu and you’re done. That’s it; no other ingredients are necessary.

How to Dye Your Items
Now that you have your Black Dye, it’s time to tint your equipment with that menacing hue.
If you’re playing the Java Edition of Minecraft, just place the Black Dye and the piece of equipment you want to dye in your Crafting Menu.
If you’re on Bedrock Edition, you’ll need to craft a Cauldron and a Bucket first, both of which require a lot of Iron Ingots.

Now you know how to make Black Dye in Minecraft. That wasn’t nearly as hard as you thought it would be, right? We love the dark color and overall intimidating look of all-black armor, but the real benefit of black items is that they really make your other items pop. Try mixing black armor with a touch of cyan or gold for a look that really shines.
