Hollywood actress Jennifer Garner recently shared her experience playing the lead role in the new Apple TV+ limited series, The Last Thing He Told Me. Garner and her co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays her husband Owen) talked to Deadline about their roles on the show.
The show follows the story of Hannah (Garner) and her husband Owen, who disappears without a trace. Before leaving, Owen manages to send Hannah a cryptic note with just two words: ‘protect her’, referring to his teenage daughter.
While trying to shield Owen’s daughter Bailey from an FBI investigation surrounding her father, Hannah discovers some dark secrets about her husband’s past.
Co-creators and producers discuss the adaptation process
During the panel discussion, Jennifer Garner jokingly complained about Owen’s cryptic note, “There’s no time for ‘XOXO love you honey, so sorry’?’” However, Coster-Waldau agreed with her and acknowledged that she had a point.
Garner revealed that she connected so much with the character of Hannah that she knew she needed to play the role after reading the book aloud to her teenage child.
She even wrote to Laura Dave, the author of the original novel, expressing her interest in playing the role and why she connected with the character so much.

Dave, who is also the co-creator and executive producer of the series, spoke about the collaboration that went into adapting the novel for the screen.
She highlighted the great partnership between herself and co-creator and executive producer Josh Singer, along with Lauren Neudstadter and Hello Sunshine, the production company run by Reese Witherspoon.
The Last Thing He Told Me also boasts an all-female directing team, consisting of Lila Neugebauer, Olivia Newman, and Deniz Gamze Ergüven.
Aisha Tyler, who plays Hannah’s best friend Jules, praised the experience of working with a female-centric crew and how it helped bring authenticity to their on-screen friendship.
Laura Dave hints at a possible season 2
Laura Dave also hinted that the story of Hannah and her family may not be over yet. She suggested that she may be working on a continuation of the story, given that the first season ends on a cliffhanger.
Dave expressed her love for working with Jennifer Garner, saying that whenever she writes now, she imagines the actress’s face.
“Now whenever I’m writing, I see Jen’s face, which is a very nice face to see, but it makes me feel like Hannah’s story is not done,” she said.
