Starting from October 1, 2023, a whopping reward of 1 million yen ($6,800) will be on offer for individuals who report crimes leading to the disbanding of illegal organizations. This initiative is a part of the National Police Agency’s continued efforts to curb crime rates and promote safer communities. This significant increase in the reward money is a testament to the importance and effectiveness of crime reporting.
The reward covers a wide range of crimes. Whether it’s illegal gambling, drug deals, human trafficking, organized prostitution, or any other criminal activity, the agency is open to tips. Interestingly, the focus is not only on individual criminals but also on mobile crime groups, often formed via social media, engaging in various criminal activities.
How to Submit a Tip and Get Rewarded
Submitting a crime tip has never been easier. The National Police Agency has set up an online platform where tips can be submitted in any language. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, there’s a toll-free Japanese service number. A private organization will collect the tips and forward them to the agency for further investigation.
Transferring the reward money is also uncomplicated. A simple bank wire transfer ensures that the informant’s reward reaches them promptly and securely. This increased reward scheme follows the success of the previous year when more than 27,000 tips were filed. These tips led to arrests in 45 different cases, and a total of 530,000 yen ($3,600) was handed out to informants, mostly for drug-related crimes.
