Social media platform TikTok is known for its constant innovations and trendsetting features. In its latest venture, TikTok has introduced the “Nudge” button, puzzling users and stirring up quite a conversation online.
Unraveling the Mystery: What is ‘Nudge’?
First surfacing in the summer, the “Nudge” feature on TikTok has created a sense of curiosity and confusion among users.
The feature is currently in its testing phase and available to a select number of users. In essence, it allows users to “nudge” their favorite creators to go live, essentially allowing for increased interaction.
Any user who sends a “Nudge” will get live updates from the creator’s account, offering a possible boost in engagement for content creators.
The Mechanics of the Nudge Feature
To utilize this feature, users need to enable it in their settings under ‘Nudge Settings’, where it can be toggled on and off.
For nudging a specific user, one needs to visit their profile and tap on the small bell icon on the top-right corner of the screen. This opens the ‘LIVE Notification Settings’ for that user, where the option to “Nudge” the creator is provided.
A Mixed Reception: Evaluating User Response
The introduction of the “Nudge” button has not been as well-received as TikTok might have anticipated. The primary reason being the lack of understanding about how this feature works.
Those familiar with it have drawn comparisons to a similar, underappreciated feature on Facebook, known as the “Poke”.
Some critics argue that this new feature may hamper the existing parasocial relationship between creators and their audience.
One user voiced concerns about creator burnout saying, “Just got nudged to go live on TikTok. [I] can confirm this feature absolutely exacerbates creator burnout and the feeling of guilt for not working 24-7.”
Despite these criticisms, there are users who find value in the new feature, seeing it as a unique way to engage with their favorite creators.
It’s still early days for the “Nudge” feature, and whether it’ll be a lasting addition to the app’s repertoire remains to be seen.
